In 1978 Dallas debuted with Larry Hagman playing J.R. Ewing, the role of the eldest son of an oil tycoon. Larry's character was a manipulative, calculating businessman. Jim Davis played the role of Jock Ewing the father, married to long time admired actress Barbara Bel Geddes, J. R's TV mother. The upstaged oil family live on a huge cattle ranch called Southfork. Southfork is located just outside the big city of Dallas Texas.
The Ewings manage their oil business from a high rise in downtown Dallas. Hence, the name of the movie "Dallas". J.R.'s long suffering wife and co-star played by Linda Gray brought much of the love and hate drama so anticipated into the movie series. The movie is based around the family that all lives together on Southfork. Miss Ellie, actress and mother Barbara Bel Geddes along with Jock Ewing. Younger brother and sibling to J.R. is Bobby Ewing played by Patrick Duffy. Also, living on Southfork is Lucy, the niece of J.R. Lucy is a child from the black sheep alcoholic brother Gary Ewing. Gary appears throughout the movie series to stir up the animosity that is a continuing on going battle. J.R. despises Gary and doesn't ever want him a part of Southfork. Sue Ellen, J.R.'s television wife, a previous Miss Texas beauty queen, realizes early that her husband is unfaithful and unmerciful in getting what he desires and all that it entails.
From the very beginning it begins with Bobby rather quickly
marrying Pamela, played by newcomer Victoria Principle. As the show
progresses the family learns of Jock Ewings earlier betrayal to his
wife Miss Ellie. Consequently, the neighboring cattle farmer and
rival is none other than Jock Ewings real son, Ray from his affair
with the other woman. Ray's character is played by Steve Kanaly.
Ray is always present around Southfork, but never a threat to J.R.
Ray is as easy going as it gets.
